Augustus Stickland’s interest in woodwork has always sat along side an interest in the arts from a young age. Having spent two years training in woodworking and joinery, he applied to the BA Fine Art Drawing course at Camberwell Collage of Arts.
Towards the end of second year, Augustus was creating work with found and salvaged wood across South London. The work started small making use of the turning workshops available, breaking away from the traditional straight edges of cabinetry, the undulating and bulbous forms struck an interest in modulation or the repetition of shape.
Now turning large pieces like ‘Threshold’ (2019) out of multiple pieces of eucalyptus, two stacked columns created a large gateway, scale was to become more of a draw for the artist’s work. Focusing on the repetition and symmetry in his work, his Final Degree Show played host to ‘OAK, 1, 2, 3’ (2019) which consisted in three large oak sculptures that stood totemic in form with each adorning their own symmetric form which would go on to be a consistent style in his work.
Now practising both sculpture and furniture making, Augustus goes on to be a part of exhibitions and is now represented by two galleries in London, M.A.H Gallery in London and Blue Shop Cottage in Brixton.
